If you need help now

In danger right now? Call 112 (999 in the UK). In Spain, 016 is free, confidential and doesn't appear on your phone bill.

Before you start

  • If you're in danger right now, call 112 (999 in the UK).
  • Use a phone or computer your partner can't get into.
  • Use a private window, or clear your history afterwards.
  • Don't use a shared email address or a shared bank account.

What happens next

  2. 2We call when you say it's safe.
  3. 3We find the free help first.
  4. 4We find you a lawyer.
  5. 5We pay. You never touch the money.

Recognise it

Is this economic abuse?

It rarely looks like abuse from the inside. If one of these is familiar, it counts.

Your partner controls the cards, the accounts or the passwords

You can see money come in, but you can't reach it without asking.

You have to ask, or explain, before you spend

Receipts checked, purchases questioned, an allowance that never quite covers the week.

You're kept from working or studying

Talking you out of a job, sabotaging interviews, turning up at your work, or making it impossible to keep clients.

Debts or contracts in your name that you didn't choose

Loans, phone contracts or credit cards taken out in your name, or pressure to sign.

Your partner hides what they earn

Refusing to share payslips or statements, or only showing them if you show yours.

Your partner won't pay their share

Shared costs, rent or child support left to you, especially once you try to separate.

The scale of it

You are far from the only one.
